KNOW YOUR WOOD

It depends on the wood, where it’s being used and the level of protection you need. A varnish creates a durable protective finish on the surface, while a sealer penetrates the wood to help protect it from moisture and the elements. A wood coating offers broader protection and can enhance or change the appearance of the timber.

Not sure which one you need? Use our Find Your Finish tool to find the right Colortone product for your project.

Outdoor timber needs a finish that can handle sunlight, moisture and changing weather conditions. Look for a product specifically formulated for exterior use, with protection against UV exposure and water penetration. The right option will also depend on whether you are finishing a deck, door, furniture, cladding or another outdoor surface.

Start by removing dirt, loose coating and damaged fibres so that you are working with a clean, sound surface. Depending on the condition of the timber, this may involve cleaning, sanding or stripping the existing finish before recoating. Once properly prepared, apply a suitable Colortone finish to restore the wood’s appearance and provide renewed protection.

Both can provide excellent protection, but they have different advantages. Water-based finishes generally offer quicker drying times, lower odour and easier clean-up, while solvent-based products are often chosen for their penetration, working time and traditional finish characteristics. Your application, wood type and desired result should ultimately determine which system is best.

Good preparation is one of the most important parts of achieving a quality finish. Make sure the wood is clean, dry and free from dust, grease, loose fibres and failing coatings, then sand where necessary to create an even surface. Always follow the preparation and application instructions for the specific Colortone product you are using.

Don’t wait until the existing finish has completely failed. Recoat when the surface begins to look dry, faded or uneven, or when it starts losing its resistance to moisture and weathering. Exterior timber will generally require more regular maintenance than interior wood because of its exposure to sun and rain.
